Telescopic Handler Training Requirements.
Telescopic Handlers, also known as telehandlers, feature many of the abilities of rough terrain forklift, they are widely used throughout the agricultural, construction and industrial environments.
Telescopic handlers normally feature a single hydraulically extendible boom, which extends the reach forwards and upwards of the machine forward of the chassis. On the end of the telescopic boom the operator can mount a wide range of attachments; these include a Forklift Tines, Bucket, Lifting Hook, Pallet Forks, Muck/Manure Grab and Secure Working Platform (similar to MEWPS).
One of the main features of Telescopic Handlers are their power and versatility, they have the ability to operate in areas where no conventional forklift can operate, with four wheel drive, four wheel steering and advance traction systems they can work in most conditions. The biggest advantage of the telescopic handler is also its biggest limitation, as the boom extends it acts as a lever destabilising the machine, when fully extended many machines can only lift 10% of their maximum load. This makes qualified telescopic handler operator training and education not only vital but a legal requirement in the UK, Europe and most industrialised nations. Manufacturers have made huge improvements in computer technology and in design, whilst reducing the workload on operators and improving their operating environment, these advances have not reduced the need for qualified operators.
The CPCS training requirements for a Telescopic Handler Operator is a 5 day course, the course objectives are as follows:
- Identify the basic construction and components, and the purpose and use of all controls and gauges.
- Identify and comply with manufacturers instructions in accordance with the operators handbook, other information sources i.e. Load charts, and applicable regulations.
- Explain all relevant documentation.
- Carry out all pre-use and running checks.
- Configure the telehandler for site and road travel.
- Travel over differing types of terrain, including rough undulating ground (not applicable for Industrial Telescopic) and substantial inclines, both with and without a load.
- Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction, both with and without a load.
- Set the telescopic handler in order to lift various loads.
- Lift and place various loads within the full working range of the telescopic handler.
- Ensure load integrity and security.
- Transport loads.
- Place and retrieve loads accurately at various places.
- Place and retrieve loads from a vehicle bed or trailer.
- Keep within safe working parameters.
- Place the telescopic handler in an out-of-service condition.
- Explain the loading and unloading procedure on and off a transporter.
Successful completion of the course and the CPCS test will enable the student to qualify for a CPCS card.
